Montecristi is located near the mouth of the Ya que del Norte River .approximately 135 km west of Puerto Plata, it is located at northwestern tip of the Dominican Republic a in the coastal lowlands near the border with Haiti. History  Montecristi ( province ) was founded in 1506 by Nicolas  de Ovando and named after and San Fernando de Montecristi after King Ferdinand of Spain. in 1533 Juan de Bolaños and 63 families migrated from the Canary Islands. Monte cristi is said to have had the country’s first aqueduct, railroad and telephones installed.
