Monte Cristi ,Dominican Republic beautiful place to visit.



Montecristi is located near the mouth of the Ya que del Norte River .approximately 135 km west of Puerto Plata, it is located at northwestern tip of the Dominican Republic a in the coastal lowlands near the border with Haiti. It is a  historical Victorian-style town with not much tourism .

History 
Montecristi ( province ) was founded in 1506 by Nicolas  de Ovando and named after and San Fernando de Montecristi after King Ferdinand of Spain. in 1533 Juan de Bolaños and 63 families migrated from the Canary Islands. Monte cristi is said to have had the country’s first aqueduct, railroad and telephones installed. By the mid-to-late 16th century Monte Cristi became a very wealthy port for immigrants from Europe, the US and South America who worked with Dominicans to set up businesses to export Wood and agricultural products that were grown in the region.  Monte Cristi was destroyed in 1606 for trading illegally as retribution for doing business with pirates . It was later rebuilt in 1756 and again became a prosperous trading center until the early 20th century.

The city, inaugurated in 1822, was the historic setting for the Manifesto of Montecristi, the official document of the Revolutionary Party in Cuba. The manifesto was written and signed by José Marti at the San Fernando de Monte Cristi home of General Maximo Gomez on March 25, 1895.

Today, Monte Cristi is best known for its farming, fishing and surrounding beauty.

 Cayo Cabrita and El Morro beach. 300 meters from El Morro beach you can swim out to Isla Cabrita, an island housing a lighthouse.There are also several shipwrecks that include colonial era galleons. Hundreds of historic shipwrecks that lie on the ocean floor between Monte Cristi and Puerto Plata. There is archaeological evidence that indicates that the shipwreck one of a merchant trader probably sinking in the second half of the 17th century. Historical and geological information that the ship was likely to have been a buccaneer vessel headed to the Americas for the Upper Hudson River Valley . Many come to Monte Cristi to visit the National Park, parque Nacional Monte Cristi, consisting of subtropical dry forest lagoons and a 900 foot high mesa.The mesa overlooks the the clear sea below and several small islands located just off shore. (Los Siete Hermanos). Or the Seven Brothers. Here in these islands turtles lay there eggs accompanied by 160 species of birds and 10 species of reptiles occupy this region.



Parque Reloj has a 50 meter clock tower designed by French engineer Alexandre Gustavo Eiffel . Imported from a France in 1895 the tower deteriorated until 1997 when the Leon Jimenez family of Aurora cigar and presidents beer fortune , financed its restoration. Recently  restored March of in 2017 by the Fuerza  Almada Dominicana.



Today, Monte Cristi is best known for its farming, fishing and surrounding beauty. One of its most common dishes would be sautéed goat with your choice of rice or plantains. What makes this dish so extraordinary is that here in montecristi the goats feed off oregano plants , so I turn when cooked it is quite a delicious  tasty plate.
